The people have spoken

August 11, 2013

Thanks to everyone who responded to our survey earlier this week. Your answer was loud and clear: you want a paperback book, and not as a stretch goal. So we’ve juggled the numbers a bit, and we’ve managed both to structure tiers that get people a book at what we think are pretty reasonable levels and to get our total goal below $20,000. I want to stress again how fortunate we are to have the support of Alan and Dr. Haslam, which has enabled us to significantly reduce our crowdfunding goal.

Without further ado, here are the reward tiers at which you will get some version of the book:

  • $15: e-book
  • $25: paperback book
  • $100: hardcover (signed and numbered, and this is the only time we’ll print a hardcover)

At each tier, you get the previous tier’s rewards. So at $100 you get all three versions of the book, plus some other goodies besides.

We’re not ready to announce the full set of tiers yet, and you may need to just wait for launch for that, but here’s what else we’ll be offering:

  • Shout-outs on Twitter/Facebook
  • Name in supporters section of site
  • Advance e-copy (PDF) of one chapter
  • Book launch party invite (Portland and Vancouver)
  • Name in supporters section of e-book or print first editions
  • e-book copy of The Husband Swap by Louisa Leontiades
  • Poly charm (photo coming soon)
  • Relationship Principles poster
  • Poly dragon T-shirt
  • Signed copy of Sex at Dawn by Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jethá
  • Private reception before the launch party in Portland or Vancouver
  • Poly pendant (photo coming soon)
  • One or both of us (you choose) will answer your question on the blog or write a post on a topic of your choice
  • Signed first edition of The Polyamorists Next Door by Dr. Elisabeth Sheff
  • Advance copy of the final manuscript
  • Sex at Dawn T-shirt
  • Time with one or both of us on Skype
  • Breakfast made by us
  • Be a reviewer: get a copy of the first draft and provide your feedback.
  • We’ll do a video blog on the topic of your choice, dedicated to you
  • Custom goodie bag selected and/or created by Franklin
  • A personal appearance by one or both us us at the event of your choosing
  • Dinner made by us
  • Your name in the acknowledgements section of the book

Anything we’ve left out? Anything else you were hoping for, or awesome things you think we should offer?

A note on the other books (besides ours) that we’ll be offering as rewards: we have tremendous respect for all the authors, and are grateful for their support of our project. Our offering the books as rewards doesn’t imply, though, that we agree with everything in them—and of course, we haven’t even seen Dr. Sheff’s book, though we’re really excited about it. In fact, you’re likely to find some contradictory views in our own book (and we did promise you no bonobos). But we think all of these authors have made a valuable contribution to the discussion of polyamory. And as Dr. Haslam said to me recently, polyamorous people “are the research and development arm of society… If we knew how to do this, we’d all be doing it. But we don’t know, and so we’re learning how do to it. We’re doing research.” For good research, we need lots of different voices and vigorous debate, and we’re happy to use our campaign as a vehicle to expose you to other takes on polyamory. After all, we’re all figuring this out together.

And if you’re in the Portland area, don’t forget to come to our crowdfunding launch party on August 22!

I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited not just about an upcoming book, but about funding an upcoming book (or any other project)!
